Preview of an interesting Horti Fair: New Products Preview for the Trade Press

On 21 August, a representative group of exhibitors unveiled the new products they will be introducing during the Horti Fair to more than twenty international trade journalists.�The Horti Fair is the biggest international trade show for Technology, Innovation and Inspiration in Horticulture and is taking place in the Amsterdam RAI from 30 October to 2 November inclusive this year.

For the trade journalists, this preview held in TomatoWorld meant that they could better inform their readers about the upcoming Horti Fair. For exhibitors, this was an extra service included in the communications mix provided by the largest international horticultural trade show. Sixteen exhibitors presented a total of more than thirty new products and services.

Anthura B.V. (Stand no. 10.0305) will be presenting at least five new pot plants (anthurium and phalaenopsis varieties) at the Horti Fair as well as a new anthurium variety for cut flower production. This breeding company has the greatest expectations for its new pot plant, Anthurium Andreanum Nubira�, a large-flowering red anthurium particularly suitable for 14-cm pots but also appropriate for 17-cm pots. Its unique flower colour, attractive size proportions between plant and pot, and its reasonably good tolerance to low temperatures are extra pluses.

The SuprimAir greenhouse from Certhon (Stand no. 11.0302) is a unique greenhouse concept for the international professional greenhouse horticulture industry. With its ingenious combination of greenhouse, ventilation, cooling and control, it is now possible to create an ideal climate all year round � and do so right down to the square metre, 24 hours a day. Ideal temperature and relative humidity are combined with low energy consumption and a reduced risk of disease occurrence.

Climeco Engineering BV (Stand no. 11.0412) is introducing a new service: Climate monitoring and advice. Using this advice system results in a more homogeneous climate, and, thus, a reduction in energy consumption. Its ability to prevent damp wet areas from occurring in the greenhouse will also reduce losses, provide higher yields and improve quality.

AQUA DECO SPRAY from DECOH B.V., Tiel (Stand no. 10.0707 ) is the first water-based decorative spray paint available to the floriculture sector. It comes in 51 different colours, provides a satin-gloss finish, and was especially developed for use on plant materials such as succulents, freshly cut flowers and decorative fruit. Another advantage provided by this water-based spray paint is that it will not mask the fragrances of flowers, plants and fruit.

Fides B.V. (Agribio Group, Stand no. 10.0306) will be introducing its new Impatiens NG Tamarinda� Max series (bedding/garden/terrace) at this year�s Horti Fair. This series makes the perfect choice for substantial, vigourous plants in large pots and hanging baskets. The plants in this series are characterised by large flowers, a luxurious growth habit, and good heat tolerance. And they also come in seven colours: Lavender, Sweet Pink, Red, Pink, Orange, Burgundy and White.

The HortiMaX CX500 from HortiMaX B.V. (Stand no. 11.0502), which features a modular structure, is a process computer that controls both the greenhouse climate and irrigation to make it the ideal solution for small and large companies. Any extension projects are then easy to realise. It provides the perfect solution when applying �Dutch� horticultural technology abroad proves difficult due to the fact that this technology is often not suitable for the local climate conditions or the user�s level of knowledge or culture. After all, every climate and country has its own optimum solution.

Energy savings and higher yields: this is what Klimrek Producten BV (Stand no. 09.0202) promises with its RS Mover. The idea here is to prolong propagation. By placing plants closer together on these special trellises during the early stage of cultivation, the grower has to heat only part of the greenhouse. This provides an energy savings of 10% a year. Meanwhile, in the other part of the greenhouse, it might be possible (depending on the choice of crop) to achieve a higher yield by allowing the crop there to produce longer.

KP Holland (Stand no. not yet known) will be presenting its Kalanchoe Taranta� Pretty Wild. Taranta� is characterised by its uniquely serrated, relatively narrow leaves combined with an umbel covered in double-flowering florets. The shape of the plant and its name, Taranta�, emphasise the exciting effect this series will have on consumers. This series also responds to the trend and demand for a �wild�, �primitive�, �natural� look. Taranta� is available in 6 colours and is suitable for 12-cm and 7-cm pots.

During the new products preview for the trade press, KUBO Tuinbouwprojecten B.V. (Stand no. 11.0202) announced three new products: two are improvements on the Ultra Clima concept. The Kubo W roof system has been updated as well: from now on, this greenhouse roof can also have a roof bar provided with rubber on either three or four sides. This will ensure less damage to the glass and a reduction in both energy consumption and waterlogging.

Logiqs Agro International (Stand no. 09.0806) has improved its own shuttle for the internal transport of containers. This new version - the 2D Shuttle � can travel over both a pipe rail and a conveyor belt. Because the shuttle can move in two directions, a large part of the greenhouse can be automated. The wireless shuttle can pull containers forward as well as tip them so that they can be weighed to calculate evaporation.

Modiform BV (Stand no. 08.0301), worked with Prestige Plants (a breeding and propagation company), a substrate supplier and a plug supplier to develop a new plug tray for paper plugs. Because the holes in this tray are recessed almost 1 cm from the bottom, the plugs sit higher in the tray. Drainage is also improved. This means that these trays can be placed on a wet or uneven surface with no resulting problems.

The Double Slip-In from Peter Dekker Installaties BV (PDI, Stand no. 11.0202) means that click-attaching screens is a thing of the past. The guiding profiles can be mounted quickly and easily to the screen profile and the trellis trus. Replacing a screen can be done much faster: in just one day. Furthermore, the screen fits straighter in the profile; once closed, it blocks out even less light.

During the new products preview for the trade press, Priva B.V. (Stand no. 11.0604) presented its new company slogan: �The best solution for any ambition�. With this slogan, this company in De Lier wants to indicate that it is helping growers worldwide to take the next step in operating their business. In coming years, Priva will be increasing its knowledge and training centres to ten that will be distributed over various continents.

Vostermans Ventilation B.V. (Stand no. 11.0509) worked with Wageningen UR to develop a new vertical fan. The aerodynamically shaped outflow hood of this Multifan V-FloFan enhances air flow to reduce the number of fans needed. Because the height of the Multifan V-FloFan is adjustable, it can be used for more crops and with a wider variety of cultivation systems. The fan has been tested on a number of crops, including cucumbers, and will soon be tested on tomatoes.

With theModular Conveyor System from WPS Horti Systems (Stand no. 09.0102) growers can create and modify their internal conveyor system themselves. This system consists of separate transport elements that can be interconnected. WPS Horti Systems can thus be compared to Lego blocks. It is also possible to add applications to the system such as ones for conducting counts or visualisations, to introduce different routings, and to operate the system using a smartphone.

The ZAPlus from Ziehl-Abegg Benelux B.V. (Stand no. 11.0614) ensures that fans will use 20% less energy or that a fan set at the same speed will increase air flow by 15%. Its plastic blades direct air pressure more effectively to give the fan a greater capacity. It thus takes less power to blow air into the greenhouse. In addition, the ZAPlus is around 8 kg lighter than comparable systems.

The second International Horti Congress will take place in the Amsterdam RAI on 30 October 2012. Internationally acclaimed speakers will be sharing their perspectives on how horticulture can contribute to the well-being of the world�s population. Keynote speaker will be Professor Gunter Pauli, perhaps best known for his book, The Blue Economy. The title for this year�s International Horti Congress is �Horticulture�s contribution to well-being�.

Horticulture offers solutions to four global challenges: ensuring sustainable energy, food, water and well-being. The International Horti Congress examines one of these challenges every year. In 2012, this is well-being. The International Horti Congress is a top international event for top entrepreneurs, CEOs, CTOs, scientists, policy-makers, politicians, NGOs and governmental authorities.

Every world citizen is entitled to well-being: health, happiness, and prosperity. But how can this be realised? High-tech horticulture has important keys at hand. At the International Horti Congress, internationally acclaimed speakers will make some astonishing and exciting connections between the history and future of international horticulture in a series of speeches with the theme �What is the next step?

The International Horti Congress will be held on 30 October and will start at 10:00 a.m. in the Forum of the Amsterdam RAI. Horti Fair 2012 turns full power of the spotlights on innovations

The most striking innovations at the Horti Fair not only have a chance of winning the Innovation Award this year. They also compete for the Press Award, which is being presented for the second time. The prize ceremony will be held in the Amsterdam RAI on the morning of Tuesday 30 October and exhibitors who want to compete must ensure that the new products they are introducing at the fair are registered before Monday 17 September.�

�The Horti Fair is the biggest international trade show for Technology, Innovation and Inspiration in Horticulture,� says its director Frans-Peter Dechering. �It is the trade fair with the most innovations in the fields of plant breeding, greenhouse technology and cultivation technique.� The Horti Fair is taking place in the Amsterdam RAI from 30 October to 2 November inclusive. The new products that have won the Innovation Award and the Press Award will be announced on the morning of Tuesday 30 October.

The Press Award was introduced last year and is conferred by a jury of representatives of the press from major horticultural titles in the Netherlands and elsewhere: Erik Titulaer from KAS, Ad van Gaalen from Glastuinbouwtechniek, Fabian Brockotter from Groenten en Fruit, Henk van Esch from Onder Glas and Peter Voskuil from the Bloemenkrant, in addition to the international jury members Heinrich Dressler from the German GB Das Magazin f�r Zierpflanzenbau, Linda Kaluzny-Pinon from the French Culture Legumi�re and Steven Vale from British journal the Commercial Greenhouse Grower.

All exhibitors who register the new products they are launching at the trade fair before Monday 17 September compete free of charge for the prestigious Innovation Award and Press Award. A jury of experts decides which innovations are the most striking and are being nominated for the Innovation Award. The reasons may be technical or environmental progress, or increased profitability, but may also include aspects like ergonomics, sustainability, economic importance and range expansion. The nominees will be announced at the beginning of October.

Horti Fair elated by presence of all companies in floricultural giant Agribio Group

Barberet & Blanc, Bartels Stek, Fides and Lex+ have registered for the Horti Fair 2012. These companies are part of the Agribio Group international floricultural enterprise. Each of the companies will be presenting themselves individually at the Horti Fair, says Harry Kloppenburg, CEO of the Agribio Group.

The Horti Fair is the biggest international trade show for Technology, Innovation and Inspiration in Horticulture and is taking place in the Amsterdam RAI from 30 October to 2 November inclusive this year. In recent months a number of leading floricultural companies already announced that they would be coming: Anthura, Corn. Bak, Gavrish, HilverdaKooij, Schoneveld Breeding, Exotic Plant, Van den Bos Flowerbulbs, Vitro Plus, Floricultura, and the rose breeders Schreurs and De Ruiter Innovations. They will now be joined, therefore, by the four companies in the Agribio Group.

�The Horti Fair is the essential international horticultural platform where we are concerned,� remarks Kloppenburg. �That's why we're happy with the new course that the Horti Fair embarked on last year. Fides worked hard with the Horti Fair and other plant breeders last year to make a success of the floricultural hall. Fides, Barberet & Blanc, Lex+ and Bartels Stek will present themselves individually at the Horti Fair. In addition, Fides is one of the companies cooperating on the HortiSeminars: the knowledge sessions being organized during the Horti Fair. Combination of technique and floriculture

Horti Fair director Frans-Peter Dechering is elated with the registration of the companies in the Agribio Group. �Their presence demonstrates that the new course of the Horti Fair is catching on. Because the large number of international visitors is the deciding factor for these companies on when to take part in a trade fair. So the combination of technique and floriculture is bearing fruit.�

The Agribio Group is not the only high-profile floricultural company, therefore, that has registered for the Horti Fair. Dechering again: �Each and every one of them is leading in floriculture and has chosen to go for quality and continuity at the Horti Fair.� Their presence means that floriculture will have an even more prominent place at the Horti Fair. Hall 10 alone � the floricultural hall � makes the Horti Fair more than worth a visit this year.�

Horti Fair s new course proves its value in the form of growth

The number of visitors and visits to the Horti Fair grew this year. Both exhibitors and visitors appreciated the new course taken by the Horti Fair. The Horti Fair is really back in business says its director, Frans-Peter Dechering. �This goes not only for the number of visitors but also for the return of the �wow factor� at this year�s Horti Fair.�

The Horti Fair is the biggest international trade fair for technology, innovation and inspiration in horticulture and took place in the Amsterdam RAI on 1 to 4 November inclusive. Because last year�s trade fair contended with a drop in the number of visitors and fewer exhibitors, its organisers decided on a new course: �from square metres to cubic metres�. The result this year was an emphasis on more content, more expertise, more opportunities for networking, and more spectacle.

To begin with, the new course of action resulted in more exhibitors: 599 (an increase of 10%). The number of visitors also went up. This was indicated by the Horti Fair�s new online visitor registration system: visitors could register in advance at the website. This made it possible to obtain a highly accurate and transparent count, according to Horti Fair�s director, Frans-Peter Dechering. �Included in our new approach�, he said, �is an even more accurate registration and transparent communication.�

Attracted to this year�s Horti Fair were 23,240 unique visitors who came from 67 countries. And they made an estimated 27,750 visits to the trade fair: an increase of approximately 20%. Of these visitors, 16,240� entered by means of a Horti Fair scan, 3,750 came from Aalsmeer, 1,500 from Vijfhuizen, 750 from the Aquatech (a trade fair running simultaneously in the Amsterdam RAI) and 1,000 were part of a group such as a delegation, a group of journalists, or a group of secondary school students. The number of people registering in advance amounted to 24,244.

The ultimate in international trade fairs for horticulture

A number of awards were presented during the Horti Fair. Among them were the Interpolis Quality Cup for the best products generated by the floricultural sector. In the category devoted to cut flowers, first prize went to Royal van Zanten. Sion BV walked off with the top award for pot plants. The Marketing Cup � the award for the exhibitor who attracted the most visitors to the trade fair � went to Hortiplan.

Corn. Bak won the Innovation Award in the �Green� category with its Florinilla^� �Bella�^[p]. Mardenkro won both the Innovation Award in the �Technique� category and the Press Award for its coating product, ReduFuse. Mardenkro�s Managing Director, Jort Gerritsen, thus had two reasons to be a satisfied exhibitor. �Winning these prizes led to countless contacts with interested growers, distributors, members of the press and others. For us, the Horti Fair 2011 has been a very rewarding trade fair.�

Other exhibitors were extremely satisfied as well. �We�re headed in the right direction now�,�said Wouter Kuiper, Managing Director at Kubo, �And if we stay on this path, Horti Fair will once again be the ultimate in international trade fairs for horticulture.� �The positive vibes are back at the Horti Fair�, said Mattijs Bodegom, Manager of Marketing & Communications at breeding company Fides. �We took not one but four steps forward.�

Visitors, too, had high praise for the trade fair. �This afternoon, Rob Baan of Koppert Cress congratulated me on the trade fair with the words �Congratulations, you and your team have put Horti Fair back on the map�,� said Horti Fair Director Frans-Peter Dechering. �This is just one of the examples of this praise, and it�s simply wonderful to hear.�

Horticulture works worldwide on solutions for water

The International HortiWeek was opened on Tuesday 1 November with a congress to which an international group of speakers had been invited. They addressed problem-solving approaches that horticulture can offer for the challenges involving water and food supplies in the coming decades. Growing in substrates under protected conditions is one of the spearheads in this process. The speakers emphasized that socio-economic and political factors are important parameters in the introduction of new horticultural techniques.

The 7th billion citizen of the world will be born this week and there will be 9 billion people on earth in 2050. All these people must have healthy food. But that is not the only challenge facing the world in the coming decades. The skewed distribution of rich and poor, hunger and obesity and climate changes demand new solutions for water and food supplies.

Golden triangle

�The ability to feed 9 billion people requires cooperation between the business community, knowledge institutions and government. This so-called Golden Triangle is the strength of Dutch horticulture,� said Professor Martin Kropff of Wageningen University and Research centre. �Dutch horticulture is high tech and has proved that it is fully capable of finding innovative solutions for the major challenges.� He referred in this context to examples like the improvement in the taste of tomatoes, new packing technologies, mobile cultivation systems and energy-producing greenhouses. He made the following proviso, however. �We are increasingly realizing that it is not only technology that is crucial, but socio-economic factors as well, particularly in regions where water is scarce. In Ethiopia, for example, horticulture is developing at a tremendous pace. The horticultural areas use water from the lakes and those lakes become empty far too quickly. Effective agreements must be reached quickly to deal with this problem, but that is extremely difficult because different governmental authorities are involved.�

Closed greenhouses

Gene Giacomelli from the University of Arizona also considered the water problem. He concluded that water will be a real problem for 1.8 billion people in 2025: �We have to start work now on solutions that will enable us to produce sufficient food with little water.� The researcher is working on a number of projects involving cultivation under extreme conditions, such as at the South Pole or on Mars. It really is possible to grow vegetables and fruit in a completely conditioned environment. Giacomelli explained that water efficiency of almost one hundred per cent can be achieved in closed greenhouses where the crops grow in substrates and referred to Village Farms in Texas and Houweling Nurseries, where high levels of tomato production are achieved in semi-closed greenhouses with very little water.

No GMOs

Kees Reinink from Rijk Zwaan approached the food problem from a completely different angle: �New techniques enable completely different methods of plant breeding. In the past, selection only used to be possible on the basis of external characteristics. But the method of sequencing now makes it possible for plant breeders to identify hereditary characteristics at gene level. This enables targeted searches for resistance in wild plants for example, or in plants of the same variety, such as cucumbers and melons. This means a tremendous expansion of the prospects for plant breeding. As a consequence, we see no need to work with genetically modified organisms to increase production. In the first place it is expensive, and in the second place public opinion on the subject is much too negative. It is extremely important for the breeding of horticultural crops, incidentally, that Plant Breeders� Rights remain intact. �

More than technique

The conclusion that solving the food issue in drylands requires more than technique was also echoed by Richard Tutwiler from the Desert Development Centre in Cairo. A lot of hard work is going on in North Africa in order to decrease the dependency on rain. Horticulture offers options to do this by improving cultivation systems. Tutwiler is convinced that the improvement of existing cultivation techniques will also improve the quality of life for people in the region. �Food security rises, unemployment falls and environmental pollution decreases,� he argued. Tutwiler emphasized that horticulture means more than greenhouses alone for North Africa. �We also see great prospects for vineyards and woody crops in our region.�

To end the congress, Peter Westerveld and Ole Shirim Sayialel of the Naga Foundation presented a clear and simple solution to make the desert green again. By digging ditches of one metre deep, rainwater also actually penetrates into the soil and the natural processes of the soil are revived.
Congress chair Agnes van Ardenne finished with the conclusion that horticulture can contribute many solutions in the technical sense, but that huge challenges remain with regard to making technique accessible for practical implementation, the investments, the necessary management skills and the marketing.

After the close of the congress Liesbeth Spies and Jaap Bond, members of the Provincial Executives for Zuid-Holland and Noord-Holland respectively opened the International HortiWeek together with Dick van Raamsdonk from IFTF, Floris Olthof from Flora Holland and Ewald van Vliet from the Horti Fair.
